White noise, rain or birdsong: how to choose a sleep sound

Warm bedroom with candle-like light and a calm bedside mood

Sleep sound machines often list big libraries of rain, waves, white noise and nature sounds. The number matters less than the fit. The right sound is the one that helps the room feel steady without demanding attention.

Use steady sounds for noisy rooms

If traffic, neighbours or hallway noise are the problem, try white noise, rain or fan-style sound. These sounds create a consistent background, which can make sudden noises feel less sharp.

Use softer sounds for wind-down

If the room is already quiet but your mind is busy, try gentle rain, ocean or low ambient sound. Keep it quiet enough that you can ignore it.

Use birdsong carefully

Birdsong can be lovely as a wake sound because it feels like morning. For sleep, some people find it too detailed. If your brain starts listening for the next chirp, choose something smoother.

Set a timer

Sunni Light includes 26 sleep sounds and a 5-180 minute sleep timer. Start with 30 minutes. If you are still awake when the sound ends, extend it. If you never hear it stop, you have probably found a good setting.
